Piezoelectric 1-3-Composite Oscillators (Dice-and-Fill Method)

Piezoelectric 1-3-composite oscillators are composite materials made out of a piezoelectric material as oscillating component and a plastic as filling material. The pixels of piezo ceramic are embedded like a matrix in the plastic (1-3 layout). To stimulate the pixels electically gold electrodes are applied on the top and bottom side of the composite. By applying an AC voltage the pixels start oscillating and emitting ultrasonic signals. The possible frequencies of this signals range from few hundred kHz to several MHz.
Composite oscillators stand out against conventional ultrasonic sensors due to their high resolution and simultaneously high signal strength. The characteristic parameters, like the coupling factor, the acoustical impedance and the dielectric constant, are significantly better. This makes the composite oscillators perfectly suited for applications with sound absorbing materials like plastics, composite materials and cast materials.
